The tall, imposing limestone walls of the Primrose Cottage Garden were constructed from stones (well, pebbles actually) laboriously collected in the fields around Nether Swell in Gloucester. They say that it wasn’t so much the collecting that caused the lengthy delays in the completion of the walls; it was more the buzzing dragonflies when the Puggies that were building the walls reached a certain height. Normally great friends and allies of the Fairy World, the dragonflies had become a great nuisance during the three long years of construction due to an abnormal spike in their rate of birth. It seems during one long cold winter evening, a season prior to the walls ascent, there was a firefly blackout lasting for a period of several days. This unexplained event resulted, for some peculiar reason, in a dramatic increase in the dragonfly population. Whether you wish an entire walled garden or only a few stonewalls in the garden these stately walls are certain to create ‘illusions’ of grandeur.
